Proprietary Carbide Tile Geometries

SCC’s proprietary tile geometry capabilities give mud motor bearing manufacturers and repair facilities a powerful advantage in a highly competitive downhole drilling market.

SCC (Southern Carbide Company) specializes in producing custom tungsten carbide (TC) tile configurations for radial bearings used in mud-lubricated positive displacement motors (PDMs). These tiles are manufactured exactly to print, whether the print is an OEM drawing, a customer’s proprietary design, or an enhanced version developed for specific drilling conditions. Because every dimension, tile shape, pattern, spacing, coverage percentage, and matrix infiltration detail can be replicated or optimized on demand, SCC eliminates the need to rely solely on the original equipment manufacturer for replacement or upgraded bearings.

Mud motor bearing manufacturers have long used specific “names” or internal designations to keep their products proprietary. Common examples include branded tile styles such as “High-Density Hex,” “Helical Staggered,” “Grain-Infused Matrix,” “Premium Round Array,” or coded patterns like “Type-A,” “HD-55,” or proprietary layout numbers. These names are not just marketing labels; they describe unique combinations of:

  • Tile geometry (round, hexagonal, rectangular, or custom profiles)

  • Surface coverage (typically 55 % or higher, with optimized spacing to balance hardness and crack resistance)

  • Arrangement (staggered, straight, helical, checkerboard, or multi-layer)

  • Matrix infiltration process (brazed, sintered, or liquid-metal bonded for >70,000 psi bond strength)

By assigning a proprietary name to a particular configuration, manufacturers protect their intellectual property and make direct replication difficult for competitors. The result is that operators and repair shops often face long lead times, high costs, or limited availability when they need exact replacements or performance upgrades.

SCC breaks that dependency. With in-house design support and precision manufacturing, SCC can produce any of those named configurations, or create entirely new ones, directly from supplied prints or CAD files. Whether the requirement is a drop-in replacement for an existing proprietary bearing or a next-generation layout engineered for higher RPM, greater side loads, or extended run times in abrasive formations, SCC delivers the exact tile set needed. This flexibility translates into faster turnaround, lower cost per operating hour, and the ability for customers to develop and protect their own branded bearing technology.

In short, SCC does not just supply carbide tiles, it enables manufacturers to maintain or expand their proprietary edge while gaining full control over supply chain, quality, and continuous product improvement. If you have a specific tile print, named configuration, or performance target in mind, SCC can manufacture it to print and help keep your mud motor bearings performing at the highest level.
