Tungsten Prices Pull Back from Early-Year Peaks, But Challenges Remain for Custom Carbide Components

As of mid-July 2026, the tungsten market has entered a period of consolidation after the sharp volatility that defined the first half of the year. Prices for key intermediates and powders have retreated significantly from their early-2026 highs, yet the underlying supply dynamics continue to create uncertainty for buyers of custom tungsten carbide components.


What Happened in Early 2026


Tungsten prices surged dramatically from January through mid-March. Concentrate prices roughly doubled in a short window, with ammonium paratungstate (APT) and tungsten powder reaching extreme levels. This was driven by tightened Chinese export licensing (limited to a small number of approved exporters for 2026–2027), reduced mining quotas, declining ore grades, and strong downstream demand.

By late May and into June, the market reversed course. Chinese domestic prices fell roughly 50–58% from those peaks amid weaker consumption, inventory destocking, and cautious buying. As of early July:


· 65% wolframite concentrate traded around RMB 435,000–455,000 per ton.

· Domestic APT hovered near RMB 630,000–700,000 per ton.

· Tungsten carbide powder was in the RMB 950–1,000/kg range.

Western and international benchmarks have remained much firmer, with European APT still quoted well above $3,000 per mtu — reflecting restricted flows of Chinese material to non-domestic buyers.


Why the Correction Hasn’t Fully Stabilized the Market


The recent pullback appears largely sentiment- and inventory-driven rather than a fundamental resolution of supply constraints. China still accounts for approximately 80% of global mined tungsten. Structural factors, tighter production quotas, environmental regulations, and export controls, are expected to keep the market tight. Some analysts project a persistent global supply gap of around 17% of demand through 2028. New non-Chinese mining projects remain years away from meaningful output.

Additionally, the U.S. defense procurement rules barring Chinese-origin tungsten (effective January 2027) are prompting strategic stockpiling and diversification efforts that continue to support elevated Western pricing.


Impact on Custom Tungsten Carbide Components


For manufacturers and end-users of custom carbide parts, wear tiles, choke components, mud motor inserts, radial bearing components, and precision tooling, raw material cost remains one of the largest variables in final pricing.

Even after the recent correction, carbide powder and finished component costs sit well above pre-2025 levels. Buyers can still expect:


· Continued price volatility and shorter quote validity periods.

· Pressure on lead times and allocation for Western buyers.

· Higher emphasis on total cost of ownership rather than initial purchase price.


Many companies are responding by accelerating recycling programs, optimizing tool and component designs to reduce material consumption, extending tool life through better application engineering, and building strategic inventory or long-term supply agreements where possible.


Looking Ahead


The market appears to be searching for a new equilibrium at higher price levels than the industry was accustomed to before 2025. While the sharp upward spike of early 2026 has eased in Chinese domestic channels, the combination of export restrictions, structural supply tightness, and geopolitical considerations suggests that meaningful relief for Western buyers may be limited in the near term.

Proactive steps around recycling, design efficiency, supplier diversification, and close monitoring of market signals will be essential for controlling costs and securing supply.
